The body just can't kill them no matter how hard it tries. There are many types of cancer. Severity of symptoms depends on the site and character of the malignancy and whether there is metastasis. Most cancers can be treated and some cured, depending on the specific type, location, and stage. Cancer cells can invade nearby tissues and can spread through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to other parts of the body. Lymphoma and multiple myeloma are cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system. Leukemia is cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow, and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the bloodstream. Cancer cells often spread (or metastasize) throughout the body by way of the blood stream or lymphatic vessels to form tumors in new locations beyond the primary site of origin.

  • The use of smokeless tobacco (chewing tobacco and snuff) causes cancer of the mouth and throat.

Symptoms of Cancer

  • Hoarseness that lasts more than two weeks.
  • Night sweats.
  • Weight loss.
  • New onset of wheezing.
  • Coughing up blood, even a small amount.
  • Nausea or loss of appetite.

Treatment of Cancer

  • For tumors that are still inside the prostate, radiation therapy (using x-rays that kill the cancer cells) and a surgery called radical prostatectomy are common treatment options.
